Last week, GN-IP celebrated Juneteenth alongside community members during the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation-hosted Juneteenth Celebration at Bethune Park in North Minneapolis. Juneteenth, officially celebrated on June 19, commemorates the day when Union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and that slaves were free.
During the Minneapolis event, community members celebrated with live music and entertainment, food, children's events, and with local vendors and community organizations, including GN-IP. Executive director Sara Jones was joined by GN-IP board members Manny Atwal and Rachel Bond; summer law clerks Myranda Sandberg and Madison Wadsworth; and volunteer Chloe Benson at the event.
Myranda shared, “I decided to volunteer at for the Juneteenth celebration because I wanted to spend the day with a community that supports and celebrates liberty with each other. Being an ally and advocate for those who are otherwise marginalized by our nation's justice system is the first step to social and policy change. It was an incredible experience to feel the unfettered joy reverberating throughout the park.”
Thank you to our volunteers for spreading the word about GN-IP!
