Volunteer of the Month: Jacqueline Masse

When the Great North legal team urgently needed an interrogation video transcribed in preparation for a critical hearing, Jacqueline Masse stepped in without hesitation. A paralegal at Taft Law, she spent hours transcribing Great North freed client Cassandra Black Elk’s police interrogation. A challenging task not just because of the time commitment, but because of the difficult subject matter, Jacqueline delivered a detailed transcription complete with notes on body language in a matter of days and in time for Great North Managing Attorney Jim Mayer to utilize the document in Cassi’s hearing. Cassi’s conviction was vacated shortly thereafter.

Great North Innocence Project: How did you hear about the Great North Innocence Project and why did you want to get involved?

Jacqueline Masse: I was introduced to the Innocence Project and innocence organizations around 2008 in Chicago, Illinois, because of a personal experience with a family member. When I moved to Minnesota, I researched the local IP to inquire about needing volunteering services. Because of my personal affiliation I have a soft spot for the program and get a joy out of being a part of such a large movement to improve the injustices that this country faces within the justice System.

GN-IP: What about GN-IP's mission resonates most with you?

JM: GN-IP shines light on injustices and I 100% will support that movement. I love how GN-IP works hard for their clients and will bring in the right teams to assist with cases.

GN-IP: Describe your volunteer experience with GN-IP.

JM: I was ecstatic when GN-IP asked me for assistance; I without hesitation, I said YES. When I received the assignment, I was a bit hesitant for two reasons; one, the nature of the alleged crime, and two, the amount of time I would have to put into the project outside of my already full-time job caring for my family. The staff was great though! The assigned attorney (Jim Mayer) made sure to explain the emotional weight that may be involved and why they are fighting for the client’s exoneration. Other staff were so supportive and uplifting. The amount of appreciation after the project was uplifting. I also LOVED that they kept me informed with the outcome. It is a great reminder on how every hand makes a difference. So REWARDING!

GN-IP: What has been the most rewarding part of your volunteer experience with GN-IP?

JM: The outcome favored the wrongfully accused and knowing that my part helped is the most rewarding. It’s a reminder that it takes a village to move mountains.

GN-IP: Why would you urge others to get involved with GN-IP?

It’s an honor to be a part of such an impactful change in the injustices of the justice system. Being a part of a life-changing event; knowing you changed someone’s life forever is a feeling no one can explain, but it’s so worth it! I hold on to, “what if it was your situation; a close friend or family member, how would you feel knowing there is a team of people who really wanted to change the outcome and was working to change it?” That alone should be worth your volunteer time.
