In this month's volunteer spotlight, we are honored to feature Sydney Dobbs, a dedicated member of the Great North Innocence Project community. A Minnesota native and mother of three, Sydney discovered her passion for criminal justice reform through her involvement in the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) where she worked in adolescent corrections.
Sydney learned about GNIP online and, intrigued by the cause, reached out to explore volunteer opportunities. Starting as an administrative volunteer, she quickly became a versatile asset, answering phones, and undertaking clerical tasks at the GNIP office.
Most recently she undertook a challenging new volunteer project when she played a crucial role as a legal assistant during GNIP client Marvin Haynes’ evidentiary hearing. From assisting with witness interview preparation to acting as a liaison during the hearing, Sydney's dedication and skill throughout Marvin’s case litigation was indispensable.
Without question, Sydney says that the highlight of her volunteer journey with GNIP so far has been working on Marvin Haynes’ case. Witnessing the case's progression, from preparation to Marvin’s exoneration, was a powerful and unforgettable experience. The moment Marvin walked out of prison left an indelible mark on her, and demonstrated to Sydney the impact of collective passion and dedication on the pursuit of justice.
Describing her involvement in the Marvin Haynes case as “transformative,” Sydney emphasizes the profound impact assisting individuals facing wrongful convictions has had on her. Being on Marvin’s legal team and witnessing his release was, in her words, "one of the most incredible things" of which she has ever been a part.
Sydney, who is gearing up to start law school next fall, aspires to advocate for other innocent people like Marvin. GNIP's mission resonates deeply with Sydney, aligning with the type of work she aspires to undertake as a future lawyer.
Sydney's involvement with GNIP not only showcases her dedication but also highlights the profound impact that passionate individuals can have on the pursuit of justice. We are grateful to have Sydney in our volunteer community and making a difference in the lives of the innocent.
